English translation

Translation source: ALA 2004

Not even after death have you lost your fine reputation in the whole earth, but still all the splendid (scil. achievements) of your soul remain - both those which you inherited, and those which you learnt, according to your nature, most excellent in intellect. So now, Pytheas, you have also gone to the Island of the Blest.

German translation

Translation source: Merkelbach and Stauber, 1998

Nicht einmal als Gestorbener hast du deinen weltweiten grossen Ruhm verloren, sondern all das Glänzende deines Wesens ist alles erhalten geblieben, was deine Anlage war und was du nach deiner Natur erlernt hast, du allerbester im Planen; darum bist du auch, Pytheas, zu dem Inseln der Seligen gelangt/

Commentary

This epigram, preserved only in the Greek Anthology, was very probably inscribed at Aphrodisias for Pytheas, for whom see 11.70, 2.20, 8.610, 5.303.
