13.320. Epitaph

Description: Marble sarcophagus, with sarcophagus lid: w: 2.27 × h: 1.03 × d: 1.04. on the short sides gorgoneia above garlands held by corner Nikai; the back is undecorated; on the front garland swags support two portrait busts (an older man on the right, a youth on the left), and two erotes support a tabula ansata; in the pediments of the lid a phiale.

Text: Inscribed line 1 on the lower edge of the lid, line 2 along the upper edge of the chest, lines 3-4 on the upper moulding of the tabula ansata, line 3, and c. 8 further lines within the tabula, subsequently erased, lines 6-7 on the lower moulding of the tabula, and lines 8-11 below it.

[This sarcophagus belongs to Philippos --- of] Agathangelis, member of the tribe Hadrianis, in which will be buried the aforementioned Philippos and Zenas, slave of Aurelius Chrysippos, son of Antigonos, the natural son of [Philippos?]. No other person will have the authorization to [place or to remove someone or he will have to pay a fine of -- denarii, of which one third?] will belong to the prosecutor, and nonetheless what I have ordered will remain valid. A copy of this inscription was deposited in the registry-office during the fourth stephanephorate of Hypsikles, son of Hypsikles, son of Hypsikles, son of Menandros, in the month Dios.
