Description: Marble sarcophagus , and sarcophagus lid, (w: 2.17 × h: 1.33 × d: 1.02). The front side of the chest has a relief representation of two winged Erotes holding a tabula ansata; the pedimental lid has a tile pattern ending in lions’ heads on the front and two bosses; in the edges of the front side of the lid two reclining mourners (female; Eros); on the narrow sides of the chest a gorgon’s head.

Text: Inscribed on the lid (lines 1-3), the upper part of the body (lines 4-5), and the panel (lines 6-18). Line 19 is inscribed on the two bosses on the lid.

Letters: 0.03 (lines 1 and 3), 0.04 (lines 5-18), and 0.08 (line 19). Small circle for stop and interpunct.

(The sarcophagus was made) while they were still alive. This is the sarcophagus of Flavius Papias, an agent (?) of the most glorious (clarissima) Fulvia Cervidia Vestina, the descendant of a consul. Papias himself will be buried in it, and together with him Aurelia Faustina, the daughter of his foster-child Achilleus, his own wife, and Aurelius Euethios, the son of Paparion, and Aurelia Ammias, the daughter of Straton. Nobody else will have the authority to bury anyone in this sarcophagus, because (otherwise) he will pay to the most sacred treasury (a fine) of 2,000 denarii, half of which will belong to the person who will prosecute this crime. A copy of this has been deposited in the archives. During the term of office as stephanephoros, for the seventh time, of Hypsikles Hierax, son of Adrastos, grandson of Nikotimos, in the month Xandikos.
