5.2. Building dedication to Demos by Artemon son of Adrastos

Description: Four blue marble columns; i. Broken above and below (diam: 0.48); ii. Broken above, moulding survives below (h: c. 0.83); surface damaged. iii. Fragment broken on all sides (w: 0.40 × h: 0.355); iv. broken column drum of blueish white marble (diam: 0.46; total height not reliably measurable).

Text: ii. Inscribed just above (c. 0.07) moulding; iv. inscribed at about 1.60 from base of column.

Letters: Neat capitals with restrained seriphs, 0.03.

Date: Second century CE (monument, lettering)

Findspot: Aphrodisias: i and iii: Hadrianic Baths, Court of the aleipterion; ii : Place of Palms/South Agora, North portico; iv Tetrastoon, reused in the south portico.

Original location: Hadrianic Baths, Court of the aleipterion

Translation

Artemon son of Adrastos the son of Dionysios the son of Dinomachos dedicated the six columns at his own expense to the People, with their capitals

Commentary

These four columns are from a group of six dedicated by Artemon. Another two survive from the 14 dedicated by Nestor and Zenon, 5.205.
