2.549. Funerary inscription

Description: Large sarcophagus, w: 2.52 × h: 0.72 × d: 0.82; the face is decorated with straight fluting between rather flat egg and dart ornament above, and simple moulding below; in the centre is a tabella ansata from which an inscription has probably been erased.

ἀντίγραφον ἀπετέθη εἰς τὸ χρεοφυλάκιον ἐπὶ στεφανηφόρου τὸ τέταρτον Κλ(αυδίου) Διογένους Δομετείνου ((stop)) φανερὸν ποιῶ καὶ διὰ ταύτης
τῆς ἐπιγραφῆς ((stop)) ὅτι ((stop)) καταλέλοιπα δι'ἧς τέθειμαι διαθήκης τῇ γερουσίᾳ (δηνάρια) χείλια τὸ δὲ πόθεν δεῖ δοθῆναι αὐτὰ δεδήλωκα διὰ τῆς διαθήκης πρὸς

. . . ] a copy was deposited in the Property-archive when Claudius Diogenes Dometinus was stephanephoros for the fourth time. I make it clear also in this inscription that in my will I have left 1000 denarii to the gerousia - the sources from which this sum is to be given I have indicated in the will - with a view to their being lent out at interest, and from the resulting interest on it used for a lottery for 120 named persons; and to the winners for the giving of 9 assaria at my heroon.
