13.404. Funerary inscription for M. Aurelius

Description: White marble sarcophagus lid, broken at the back, damaged in front: w: 2.12 × h: 0.31 × d: 1.22. There are three bands of architectural moulding on the front and short sides; the corner of the left moulded pediment is visible; two unfinished corner akroteria are preserved.

Text: Inscribed on the rim, on two fasciae; K's drawing shows that two pendants interrupt the second line.

Letters: 0.025, except for the initial Η, which is 0.038 (Kubitschek); line 1, 0.025; line 2, 0.02 (Chaniotis)

Date: Early third century CE (lettering)

Findspot: Aphrodisias: Necropolis, South area: 'devant le gymnase, extra muros' (Gaudin); 'Sudseite Aphrodisias AliMullah tarlaosi' (Kubitschek); about 60 metres south of the city wall.
