12.721. Honours for Menippos and Zenon sons of Zenon

Description: Plain white marble statue base shaft (w: 0.53 × h: 1.25 × d: 0.51). The block is chipped and worn on the left side and upper edge, but complete; the top was prepared for an upper feature, with a square cutting in the centre.

Text: Inscribed on the face; the text must have begun on a crowning feature.

Letters: 0.03. Diairetic dots either side of initial Υ, line 5; dot for stops.

Date: Late second /early third century (prosopography)

Findspot: Aphrodisias: Walls, South (west part): lying on the inside of the south stretch near the South gate

[The Council and the People] honoured [with very great and ] appropriate honours Menippos and Zenon, brothers, high-priests, treasurers, temple-builders, sons of Zenon the son of Menippos, the son of Zenon the son of Kallias,(scil. who was) high-priest, treasurer, temple-builder; they fulfilled for their country, with generosity, all other magistracies and offices and financial contributions and constructions of public works, being admired for prudence, and for their agreement with each other in all circumstances, and for a life-style which is decorous and commands respect, treating all citizens as their equals, and praised for their goodwill to their country also by the divine emnperors. Zenobios fourth of the name from Epaphroditos was responsible (scil. for the erection of the monument).

Commentary

The text is identical, in content and layout, to 5.15.i, found in the aleipterion of the Hadrianic baths. For the tomb of these men see 12.525.
