4.310. i. Verse honours for Anthemios; ii. Invocation

Description: A rectangular statue base without moulding, recomposed from two fragments (w: 1.05 × h: 0.61 × d: 0.575).

Text: Inscribed i. on the front face, whose rough surface may indicate that a previous inscription had been erased; the surface has been worn away by water at the left side. ii. is cut on the right side, on a surface from which a previous text appears to have been erased, and which is oddly pitted.

Letters: i. Av. 0.035; irregular, elongated. ii. Roughly cut; 0.035-0.065 (phi), cross 0.17.

Date: i. A.D. 405/414; ii. fifth to sixth centuries C.E. or later (prosopography, lettering)

Findspot: Aphrodisias: Place of Palms/South Agora, Agora Gate/Propylon: during excavation of the collecting pool.

The array (scil. of the Carians?) set up your statue, prefect, giving a small reward for your benefactions; for, Anthemios, saving peoples and cities, you also rescued the order of the Carians, which was being destroyed, to whom (scil. the Carians) Beronikianos, occupying the seat of governor, gave instructions to make a marble statue.
