12.414. Funerary inscription for Hermas son of Nardos

Description: Right side of white marble block, broken away on the other three sides (w: 0.66 × h: 0.62 × d: 0.66.

Text: Inscribed on one face,

Letters: 0.0175-0.0225; uneven in height, spacing, and lineation; the first iota in line 1 added after completion of the word and was not observed by either Reinach or the MAMA expedition.

Date: Second half of first century CE (lettering)

Findspot: Aphrodisias: Walls, South-east Gate: re-used upside down in the construction of the gate, south side

. . . ]according to what was] ordained [[by ? . . ?son of] Hermas the son of Nardos, in which he alone is to be buried and no-one else, neither my heir nor successor, since he who has undertaken to bury anyone else (scil. here) is to pay to the People 3000 denarii and to the imperial fiscus 3000 denarii, of which the third part shall belong to the prosecutor. A copy of the inscription is placed in the archives under the stephanephoros M. Antonius Agelaos.
